'True Linux' PengPod

If you were among the many Linux fans whose interest was piqued by the PengPod "true Linux" tablet and mini PC line announced a few weeks ago, then this past weekend brought some good news for you.
Specifically, the project -- which last month was still seeking crowdfunding on Indiegogo -- surpassed its funding goal of $49,000, meaning it can now take the next step into production.
"We are now taking pre-orders directly through our site after a successful Indiegogo crowdfunding effort in which we raised more than $72,000," explains the website for the project, which is the brainchild of Peacock Imports.

Android SPAMS through SMS....!!!

Android botnet sends SMS spam through Android phones

In a new twist, spammers have built a botnet that sends SMS spam through infected Android phones, shifting the potentially pricey cost of sending spam to victims.

The trend, spotted by security vendor Cloudmark, poses a new challenge for operators. Victims whose phones are sending the SMS spam often do not know their phone is infected, and they could have their account suddenly shut down by their operator if abuse is detected.

"I think they [operators] are still working out how to deal with this," said Andrew Conway, lead software engineer with Cloudmark, which makes antispam products for operators.

Gadgets of 2013: the future is upon us

iPhone 5S

As per usual, it is expected that Apple will release an "S" update before moving up an integer.
Possible features? Respected tech industry analyst Peter Misek is predicting it will come with a new "super HD camera/screen, a better battery and NFC [near field communication - used in such things as contactless payment systems]". He also claims that, like the Nano, the phone will be available in six to eight colours.

Apple iTV

There has been speculation for some years that Apple would make a land grab for the TV market. Apple CEO Tim Cook recently remarked that turning on a TV is like going "backwards in time by 20 or 30 years". That is, like the music and phone industry previously, it's in need of an Apple update.
Possible features? Cult of Mac reported that the TV would feature both Siri and iSight to enable voice and face recognition – iPhones and iPads could also be used to control it.

Quantum Computers Using Microwave Technology

Sunday, 16 December 2012 - 0 Comments

Scientist has got success in linking the quantum properties of two separated ions using microwaves to manipulate them. This is currently done with the help of laser beams and now this advancement can shrink the size of quantum computers. This research has been done at NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) which has been published in Nature.
Microwaves have been used previously in manipulating single ions, but this is the first time when scientist from NIST used this on two separated ions places just 30 micrometers away.

3-Dimensional Computer Processor

Wednesday, 12 December 2012 - 0 Comments

Scientist at University of Rochesterb have developed a new generation of Computer Processors. These processors are based on 3-Dimensional Circuits in contrary to 2-Dimensional Circuits of today.

This can be said as the next major advance in computer processors technology. The latest 3-D processor is running at 1.4 gigahertz in the labs of University.

PAST ATTEMPTS VS LATEST RESEARCH

In the past attempts of making 3-D chips, scientist were just making a stack of regular processors. But at University of Rochesterb it was designed and built specifically to optimize all key processing functions vertically, through multiple layers of processors, the same way ordinary chips optimize functions horizontally.

This design means that every tasks such as SynchronicityPower Distribution, and Long-Distance Signaling are all fully functioning in three dimensions for the first time.

Linux 3.7 adds major ARM processor support

The latest Linux kernel version is the first with multi-platform ARM capability

The latest version of the Linux kernel, includes groundbreaking new features making it compatible with the increasingly popular ARM processor architecture.
Linux 3.7 allows distro makers to support multiple ARM platforms in the base kernel -- an important new capability, given that, traditionally, each individual piece of ARM hardware required its own custom kernel version, according to Kernel Newbies.
"A typical Linux distro for x86 PC computers can boot and work in hundreds of different PC (different CPU vendor, different GPU models, different motherboards and chipsets, etc) using a single distro install media. This ability to be able to boot in different hardware configurations is taken as a given in the PC world. However, it didn't exist in the Linux ARM world," the site notes.

Google search algorithm helps track spread of cancer

The equations search engine Google employs to predict the Web pages its users visit has inspired a new way to track the spread of cancer cells in the human body.
"Each of the sites where a spreading, or metastatic, tumour could show up are analogous to Web pages," said Paul Newton, a mathematician at University of Southern California.
Google ranks Web pages by the likelihood that an individual would end up visiting each one randomly. These predictions are based on the trends of millions of users across the Web, the 'Live Science' reported.
It uses the "steady state distribution" to calculate the probability of someone visiting a page.

Have U ever imagined a mobile app sense ur moods...!

Thursday, 6 December 2012 - 0 Comments

New App Will Let Smartphones Sense Your Moods Too

Washington: Forget about your Smartphone locating the nearest bus stop or restaurant. A new computer programme would enable the gadget to sense your moods too, through mere speech, with pinpoint accuracy, say researchers.

Surprisingly, the programme doesn't look at the meaning of the words.

"We actually used recordings of actors reading out the date of the month; it really doesn't matter what they say, it's how they're saying it is what we're interested in," said Wendi Heinzelman, professor of Electrical and Computer engineering at the Rochester University.

Heinzelman explained that the programme analyzes 12 features of speech, such as pitch and volume, to identify one of six emotions from a sound recording. And it achieves 81 percent accuracy - a significant improvement on earlier studies that achieved only about 55 percent accuracy, according to a Rochester statement.

Hybrid self-charging power cell by-passes batteries

Recently researchers at Georgia Institute of Technology have come up with what they believe is a more efficient approach. They have developed a self-charging power cell that directly converts mechanical energy to chemical energy. The cell stores the power until it is released as an electrical current. By creating a generator-storage cell, they have eliminated the need for systems using a separate battery or generator, reducing the amount of weight and space normally required to accommodate devices for generating, storing and delivering energy for people on the move.
Zhong Lin Wang, a Regents professor in the School of Materials Science and Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology, claims that the generator-storage cell will be as much as five times more efficient at converting mechanical energy to chemical energy as a traditional two-cell generator-storage system.             Components of a new self-charging piezoelectric power cell – the clear disc in the center ...

“People are accustomed to considering electrical generation and storage as two separate operations done in two separate units,” he says.

Dragon NaturallySpeaking 12 Accurate:voice recognition

Tuesday, 4 December 2012 - 0 Comments

You decide what you want to say. You say it. The words appear on the screen.
Forget the frustrating months it took you to learn typing. In fact, you can forget that writing involves any particular effort. Today's powerful, multi-core computers, combined with the latest speech recognition software and a good microphone, can produce results that are, frankly, startling.

The technology has gotten so good, in fact, that the weak link in the system appears to be the user's ability to dictate. While this may sound like a trivial point, dictation turns out to be a distinct skill that involves factors that are not intuitive. But once the skill is mastered, keyboarding seems painfully primitive.

Dockster malware targets Apple computers

New 'Dockster' malware targets Apple computers

A new piece of malicious software targeted at Apple users has been found on a website dedicated to the Dalai Lama, but one security vendor is labeling it as low risk.
The malware, nicknamed "Dockster," is a backdoor that allows an attacker to control the victim's computer, record keystrokes and export files, according toIntego, which sells security software for Macs.
Dockster tries to infect computers by exploiting a vulnerability in Java, CVE-2012-0507. The vulnerability is the same one used by the Flashback malware, which first appeared around September 2011 and infected as many as 800,000 computers via a drive-by download. Flashback was used to fraudulently click on advertisements in order to generate illicit revenue in a type of scam known as click fraud.
Apple patched the vulnerability in Java in early April and then undertook a series of steps to remove the frequently targeted application from Macs.

Restore Windows From Command Prompt

Most of us at some point of time might have affected by computer virus, malware, Trojan etc. Sometimes these viruses block antivirus and recovery tools; in that case restoring Windows system becomes difficult. If your computer is affected with virus it may not load correctly due to corrupted system files. Situation become worst when you are unable to restore to an earlier restore point from the user interface. If you are in the same situation you can try to Restore Windows System from command line. If by any means you can login to your command prompt then there are chances that you could restore your system. In this article I will explain how you can restore a Windows system from command line in the safe mode. This trick works in all version of MS Windows.

STEPS TO RESTORE WINDOWS SYSTEM FROM COMMAND LINE:

  1. First of all restart your system and during the boot process press F8 to enter into Windows Safe Mode.

Love iTunes:here is new iTunes 11

Sunday, 2 December 2012 - 0 Comments

iTunes11 finally available for download

Apple's iTunes store is a massive network, with more than 200 million active accounts across the world.

Apple was originally supposed to release iTunes 11 -- a total revamp of the longstanding music and apps manager -- in October. The launch was then delayed because of "engineering difficulties."Reports surfaced earlier this week that Apple would release iTunes 11 within its promised November timeframe.Since its debut in 2001, iTunes has morphed from a standard music player into something larger and more complex. It's no longer just a music player -- it's also an App store, a music and movies store and a way to manage iPod, iPhone and iPad devices.
In other words, iTunes has become a bloated, slow, unwieldy mess.Whether or not iTunes 11 can solve all these problems is unclear. We'll report back later with a full hands-on review.
In the meantime, Mac users can grab the update from Software Update and on Windows by having iTunes "Check for Updates."
The software is also available for download directly from Apple -- though the download links may take a few minutes to propagate.
              njoy listening to music :-)
